Owen has seen every side of the marketing industry on his way to joining Cake, be it sales, social media, or PR, and has garnered skills from each along the way. As our brand marketing executive, Owen heads up the marketing efforts for the Cake Agency brand, but lends his skillset to client work where needed.
As big of an appreciator of work as he is a creator, Owen jumps headfirst into whatever brand or industry he may be working in, to unpack what gives it its sense of identity, and what makes it tick.
Having previously competed in national level powerlifting competitions, there should be no doubt about Owen’s dedication to compete with the very best in whatever field he finds himself in.
This was an organic search project that brought the quality of a client's search results in line with that of their product. With the amount of consistent work that this required from team members across Cake, seeing our efforts finally bear fruit was particularly rewarding. To compare where the client was before we started working with them, to where they are today is night and day, and makes me excited to see what comes next.

I think everyone involved in this project would say that it was just a super enjoyable one from start to finish. Tone of voice is not something that all brands prioritise, so getting to work on a tone of voice guide for such a fun brand - who really benefited from it - was great.
An overall wonderful opportunity to bring a brand’s messaging to life, and the before and after really makes me smile.

Working on Surprise Shirts was a bit of a full circle moment for me, as I actually went to school with the founder. My family had told me about the business when it was just starting in 2020, so it was quite surreal to then get a chance to work with them - in a completely different city as well. Surprise Shirts already had a great tone of voice, but expanding on it and putting it in writing really lifts the whole site, and I think the messaging is one of the strongest elements of the new brand too.

Despite only assisting on the messaging for this project, it was a joy to watch unfold.
When the team were asked to turn off all ads immediately - it’s one of my most memorable moments working at Cake.

Watching this take form, all the way from before the brand had a logo to them having a full website, was so much fun to manage. Boxeroo were really responsive and knew exactly what they wanted, leaving our design and development teams to really take charge.

My role puts me at the center of what everyone else is doing, and so getting to the bottom of how everyone is contributing to each individual project, and portraying that through our channels gives me the creative free reign I crave. Having not worked in eCommerce before Cake, I love that I get to be a part of a team made up by people with vastly different skills, because I get to learn more about industries I otherwise wouldn't and everyone brings a unique perspective.
My role is quite different from everyone else's, as most of the work that I do is directly for Cake and not for our clients.
Typically, I'm busy writing blog content and case studies, posting on our social channels, scheduling emails, and catching up with other team members to get to the bottom of what great work we've been doing. I do lend some help to clients where needed, be that email copy or writing content to improve SEO rankings, which I find a nice change of pace.
Where do I start?
First and foremost, words. I firmly believe that we take the power of words for granted, but they can do so much for us when used thoughtfully. Outside of the pen, I am just obsessed with art, both consuming and creating, be it music, film, or actual paintings. Additionally, having competed in powerlifting when I was younger I still follow the sport from a distance, but have expanded my horizons since. So I love anything active, and rock climbing, running, or occasionally getting under the barbell again are my go to's.
Every great relationship starts with a conversation. We’d love to talk with you about your next project and answer any questions you might have about Shopify. But be warned… once we get talking about this stuff, it’s hard to shut us up!
