Shopify has just pulled back the curtain on its Fall ’26 Edition, aptly named the “Exponential Edition". Shopify bills it as 150+ updates, but by our count, it’s well over 200 once you include the smaller items, and nearly 40% of them are regarding AI, agents, Shopify Payments, payment gateways, or the newly acquired Shop.com
As a Shopify Agency and a team of Shopify experts, we’ve combed through the full release so you don’t have to. Every Edition hands the wider community, and us as a UK ecommerce agency, a fresh set of tools to build with, but this one feels different. It’s less about individual features and more about where Shopify wants to sit in every transaction.
Here’s what you missed, what’s live today, and what you should be keeping your eyes on as new updates are rolled out.
A Quick TLDR of Shopify Fall Editions 2026
- Shop Pay now works inside personal AI agents, including Claude Duet, Meta’s Muse, Grok Bot and Instinct - US only
- Agent-ready storefronts, WebMCP and a new Knowledge Base let you control what AI says about your brand.
- Shopify’s rollout feature now coordinates theme, checkout, discount and catalogue changes across headless, POS, Google shopping and the Shop app, with automatic rollback
- Shop Pay and local payment methods can run beside your existing payment provider if you choose to not use shopify payments
- Shopify Protect adds backtested fraud rules and AI-drafted chargeback responses
- Native stock counts now arrive in the POS admin, slightly closing the gap left by Stocky earlier in the year
- Developers get next-gen events, script tag deprecation, IP restrictions and a framework-agnostic Hydrogen
If that’s piqued your interest, let’s dive in.
What Is Shopify Editions?
Shopify Editions is Shopify’s biannual showcase, bundling a huge wave of new features, tools and upgrades into two (in this year’s case, three) major drops a year. Instead of trickling updates out piece by piece, Shopify tells one connected product story, with a theme that marks a moment in commerce - laying our a roadmap of what has been added and what merchants and agencies can expect. That makes life easier for merchants, developers and partners, who can see everything at once and plan accordingly.
Fall ’26 follows Spring ’26, which we rated a B+, and the AI-heavy Winter ’26 renAIssance edition, which earned an A. We also covered Summer ’25 if you want to see how far the platform has come in a year. So, can Exponential beat them?
What Is Included in Shopify Editions Fall ’26?
The Big Picture: Shopify Wants to Be in Every Transaction
The through-line of this Editions is clear, and the writing was on the wall with their recent purchase of the Shop.com url; Shopify wants to be in the transaction wherever buying happens, whether that’s a chat window, a personal agent or a brand that isn’t on Shopify at all. Shop Pay and Shop sign-in are how it gets there.
It also matches where Shopify makes its money. In Q2 2026, Merchant Solutions (payments, Shop Pay and the like) made up 78% of Shopify’s revenue and grew 37%, according to its Q2 10-questions. Shopify is investing where the transaction happens, and this Edition shows it.
Alongside some smaller features such as a “shop guarantee” trust marker for brands to add to their carts, an additional Thank you page in the checkout, and a redesigned checkout page, here are the biggest additions in this Fall Edition.
Agentic Commerce
Shop Pay Inside Personal Agents
Shoppers can now discover products, approve purchases and check out with Shop Pay in Muse by Meta, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct. Card details are never shared, and every order lands in the Shopify admin, so you keep the customer relationship. With Claude Duet, Shop Pay even works for brands off Shopify entirely.
Add the new shop.md skill, which lets agents like ChatGPT and Claude find products and check out via Shop Pay, plus checkout in Google Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app, and the direction is obvious. Our earlier thoughts on AI shopping and ecommerce are looking increasingly well-timed.
One big caveat: this is currently US-only, but with many European agencies - like ourselves - supporting brands with an international presence, this is still something we need to keep on top of.
Even so, this is in some ways a blessing in disguise, giving UK and EU-based brands a window to get prepared and be ahead of the curve when this drops on our side of the atlantic.
Agent-Ready Storefronts and a New Knowledge Base feature
New WebMCP tools let you set guardrails for how AI agents search products, update carts and guide shoppers through your checkout by using structured tools registered by your store. Crucially, your own store's checkout rules still apply, including 3D Secure, blocking extensions and required terms, and agents hand control back to the buyer where human input is needed. It works on Liquid and Hydrogen storefronts using Shopify checkout.
Additionally, The new Knowledge Base features lets you review and approve the facts agents share about your store straight from the Shopify Admin, from return windows to shipping destinations, which means nothing is shared with AI until you approve it.
Product Data Is the New Shop Window
Shopify ha enhanced the ways that AI agents parse through information on your store, now relying heavily on product information catalogues. For merchants, this means agents read your product catalogue, not your theme in the way a customer would. As a Shopify development agency that specialises in bespoke theme builds, that stings a little, but it’s ultimately reflective of changing customer needs.
Worth doing now:
- Run the new Shopify Catalog eligibility check
- Fill in the business details that agents see, including shipping policies and FAQs. If you leave them empty, agents may fill the gaps based on assumptions
- Put your sizing, materials, and care information in text, not images
- Edit your store’s agents.md file so that it describes your brand accurately
Check the small print. Agent based checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini doesn’t support subscriptions or bundles, and Shopify’s team has told partners it doesn’t currently work with third party checkouts such as Global-e or three-page checkout. Additionally, as agents now pull through markdown prices, your sales prices need to be defensible.
Flagship changes
One Rollout for Themes, Discounts and Catalogues
For us, this is the most useful peak-trading change in the Edition. Rollouts can now schedule, A/B test and gradually ramp theme, checkout, discount and catalogue changes together, and they reach beyond the online store to headless builds, Shopify POS, Google Shopping campaigns, and the Shop app.
This means you can schedule promotions ahead of time, even promotions limited to an individual market. What’s more, if you do roll out any per-market price changes, they roll back automatically when a promotion ends.
For enterprise brands with a Black Friday Cyber Monday plan, that’s one controlled change window instead of five separate launches. Note that metaobject and page content on product pages and blog articles isn’t covered yet.
A More Capable Sidekick
Sidekick, Shopify’s built-in AI assistant used to answer questions. Now it does the work. Sidekick can now tackle complex workflows, stage multiple changes to a site at once, write and run code, search the web for external queries, and it also remembers your preferences.
For example, you approve a plan once and watch sidekick apply changes, such as editing descriptions across every product in a collection. It can also create draft orders, answer payout questions, and give pricing tips powered by Shopify’s Smart Pricing featur, and its recommendations now factor in some of the apps in your stack. “Some” being the keyword, with Judge.me and Smile.io being the only ones we actively use, but we’re keen to see how this rolls out over the next few weeks.
The most interesting addition here is that recommendations are apparently tested by Shopify’s SimGym A/B testing tool before you apply them. We were lukewarm on SimGym at Winter because simulated shoppers can’t replace real purchases, so we’d still treat these as a starting hypothesis - and also, any recommendation given by an agency partner should supersede that of an AI tool. Even so, turning bulk changes into reviewable work rather than bespoke scripts and IT tickets is a step forward, and smaller merchants with less development knowledge should keep their eyes.
Canvas Arrives in Early Access
Shopify’s new Canvas editor was unveiled earlier this month, letting you edit your entire store in one view, zoom into any detail and work with Sidekick to turn ideas into a custom design. Shopify says merchants get from no theme to a launched store 20% faster. And it works from inside agents like ChatGPT and Claude.
Sounds great, and we can’t wait to get our hand on it. Unfortunately though, Canvas isn’t compatible with third-party themes (including our own Cake theme), theme app extensions, rollouts or markets. It lacks app blocks and per-market customisation, and Canvas themes stop receiving updates like the very updates announced in this Edition - sounds like someone on Shopify’s solutions team got a bit too excited to roll this out as it doesn’t quite sound finished when all of that is put in one place.
Even so, Canvas moves some storefront work from a developer queue to a merchandising conversation, but it won’t replace your Shopify website builders just yet. We explored this tension in our look at Shopify’s AI tools and web development.
Payments
One of the biggest points of focus in this edition was on Payments and where shopify can join the conversation in the transaction, even on non-Shopify payments
Payments Beside Your Existing Provider
A top question from partners over the past few years, was whether brands can keep their current payment provider but still provide the Shop Pay functionality. Our prayers have been answered, as this Editions makes that request a reality.
Shop Pay can now run beside an existing provider such as Stripe. In fact Merchants on Adyen or Checkout.com gateways can offer Shop Pay today without needing to migrate to Shopify Payments, although a pricing premium does apply.
Local payment coverage has grown too, with Shopify Payments now accepting more regional payment gateways such as Alipay & WeChat Pay (both China), Satispay & Scalapay (both Europe), and GrabPay (Singapore) are now available in store with Shopify Payments, MB WAY (Portugal) and OXXO (Mexico) and Cartes Bancaires (France) now working online.
All-In Prices, Shipping in Markets and Cart Preview
Shopify Managed Markets now offers all-in international prices that include duties and taxes, with flat-rate shipping set per market (early access 24 September, GA 23 October). Shopify reports that brands who have activated this on early access have already seen around 50% higher international conversion, although we’ll believe those lofty numbers when we see them.
Still to come is “cart preview”, which lets merchants build a test cart for any buyer context and see which market applies, plus prices, availability, shipping, taxes and duties. If you sell internationally, catching a misconfigured market before a buyer does is key.
Custom Checkout Fields
Custom fields are coming to the checkout and accounts editor with no additional apps such as checkout extensions required. This not only works online, but across Shop Pay, POS and agentic channels.
Custom fields like these are especially important in EMEA for B2B purchases, where merchants may need VAT IDs, but unfortunately this update won’t land before Black Friday.
Shopify Protect
Fraud protection is getting a serious upgrade with Shopify’s new app Shopify Protect. Merchants and partners have long been asking for better fraud protection within Shopify Payments, and not only has Shopify answered our call, it’s come at a perfect time, with vulnerabilities to PHP and Node.JS last week, many in the ecommerce world are looking to keep their sites as secure as possible.
Shopify Protect supposedly does a number of things for merchants,
It blocks high-risk orders from taking place before a payment is authorised, explains the risk in plain language on every order, drafts AI-generated chargeback responses specific to the customer’s bank, and automatically attaches carrier proof of delivery. Additionally, the app’s “Rule Builder” - a paid-for add on - lets you write custom rules and backtest them against your last 90 days of orders. Shopify says Protect wins 60% more “product not received” disputes. Rule Builder is a paid product, and wider chargeback protection is still “coming soon”, but it’s valuable for brands with high average order values and those who sell high-ticket items.
Compatibility Forms
A smaller, but notable change was the introduction of compatibility forms. The bank sponsors for Shopify Payments place limitations on certain product types such as regulated items but also high-ticket items such as watches and jewellery. This has long been a point of frustration for brands wanting to add local payment methods to their store via shopify Payments. However, Shopify has unveiled a new route to compliance for these items. Merchants need simply fill in a compliance form per product, which then qualifies them for Shopify Payments. It’s likely to be a long process, but if it sets, merchants up for more purchases long-term. It’s a process worth going through.
Operations and Analytics
The Shopify admin is getting a complete refresh, with cleaner navigation and easier access to Sidekick, rolling out to all pages soon. Shopify’s partner briefing lists the new searchable audit log, showing who changed what and from where - which is key for agency client relationships, where it’s sometimes unclear who has made a change.
Additionally, we discussed this change in depth, but your analytics needs a health warning.
Sessions moved to a new pipeline on 23 September, with more consistent bot filtering, a 30-minute inactivity model and consent-aware counting, which means merchants need to rebaseline their numbers and judge Black Friday on orders and not be too focused on percentage level metrics such as conversion rate.
Updates to Key Shopify apps,
Saving this one to the end as it’s simply a quality of life update to two of our favoutite Shopify apps.
Shopify’s search and discovery app allows users to search for products on site; this Edition rolls out an update to add Predictive search, which displays suggested results as a user types. It helps customers refine their search without being redirected to a search results page. Customers can quickly explore your store by viewing suggested search terms and products. Shopify has reported that this has boosted Add-to-Cart from searches by 8% on brands with Early access.
Additionally, Translate & Adapt, Shopify’s Built-in translation tool, now includes additional languages - crucially including languages read from right to left such as Hebrew and Arabic, which is key for merchants selling in the Middle East.
Your Pre-Black Friday Checklist
If you take one thing from this Edition, make it this. Here’s what we’d be doing in the next few weeks:
- Get agent-ready. Run the eligibility check, complete your Knowledge Base and move key product information out of images and into text
- Plan peak trading with Rollouts. Schedule theme, discount and catalogue changes together and let them roll back automatically
- Audit your sales-prices. They now reach AI agents automatically, so every markdown needs to be defensible
- Rebaseline your analytics. The session change breaks year-on-year comparisons, so judge Black Friday on orders and revenue
- Test Shopify Protect’s free tier next to your current fraud tool and compare false declines
Our Rating for Shopify Fall Edition ’26
Exponential is a confident, cohesive Edition. Shopify has clearly decided where it wants to win, and almost every update, from Shop Pay in agents to Rollouts and Shopify Protect, points at the transaction. The payments flexibility is the answer partners have been asking for, and the security updates are some of the most practical we’ve seen recently.
It loses marks for how much is still early access or “coming soon,” and it also lands uncomfortably close to Black Friday, when many merchants don’t want to make any changes to their store.
Compared with Winter’s A and Spring’s B+, we’re giving Shopify Fall ’26 an A-. It’s a clear step up from Spring, but only the small print holding it back from matching Winter.
