Social innovations to watch out for | April 2022

Social media never stops evolving and each month welcomes brand new updates across all of the most popular platforms. Whether it’s for your brand or your clients, your business will benefit from keeping in the loop with the latest updates.

Social media never stops evolving and each month welcomes brand new updates across all of the most popular platforms. Whether it’s for your brand or your clients, your business will benefit from keeping in the loop with the latest updates.

This month we are focusing on Instagram as the innovations did not stop this month…  👀

1. Instagram to enable all users to tag products in feed posts

As eCommerce continues to expand across our social platforms, Instagram will now allow all of its users to provide a direct link to products and brands in their Instagram posts starting with those in the US.

Instagram explains:

When this feature is rolled out, Instagram will be facilitating a wider eCommerce focus and it will provide a free boost for brands on the app, further helping evolve customer behaviours to be accustomed to tagging products and increasing product discovery.

2. Instagram tests scheduled stickers for Stories

Instagram is currently testing a new ‘Scheduled

The new ‘Scheduled’ sticker is now available to some users in the latest version of the app.

3. Instagram launches algorithm-free feed sorting options

Instagram

Favourites – this displays the latest posts from accounts that you have added to your ‘Favourites’ list. You can add up to 50 accounts as favourites, helping to prioritise updates from these users.

Following – this shows users’ posts from all the accounts that they follow in the app, as per the regular Instagram feed.

Without algorithm interference, these two views will now show users their posts in chronological order. Users can now control how they wish to view their feeds and choose their preferences! However, this is only achieved by manually selecting the feed you want with no default available, meaning each time you log in you will have to reselect your preference.

4. Instagram is testing a new fully immersive Feed

Whilst being a hot topic for a while, Instagram is testing a new fully-integrated home Feed that would present everything in an immersive, full-screen, swipeable UI. Stories are said to be presented with a frame bar at the bottom of the display, indicating you can swipe left to see the other frames, while videos have a progress bar instead.

This new Feed focuses on evolving with TikTok

5. Instagram announces auto-generated captions for IG Feed videos

Earlier this month, Instagram announced that it is introducing auto-generated captions for videos on its app. Up until now, creators had to manually add captions to their videos. Instagram says the addition of captions will make Instagram more accessible for users who are in the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, alongside being useful for users who prefer to watch videos without sound. 17 languages will be rolled out including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Vietnamese, Italian, German, Turkish, Russian, Thai, Tagalog, Urdu, Malay, Hindi, Indonesian and Japanese, with support for more languages coming soon.

This feature is a long time coming as platforms such as TikTok have been ahead of the curve and launched this feature back in April 2021.
